What moves your engagement rate

The percentage is only as useful as the number you divide by and the posts you average. These are the four things that change it most.

  1. What you divide by

Followers show how your own audience responds. Views show how a video did once the platform pushed it further. They answer different questions.

  2. Which actions you count

Likes and comments are the baseline. Shares and saves usually say more about intent, so add them if you can see them.

  3. Account size

Small accounts often show a higher percentage, because a few comments go a long way. Compare yourself with accounts of a similar size.

  4. How many posts you average

One viral clip can lift the number for weeks. Average your last 10 to 20 posts for a rate you can quote to a brand.

Engagement rate questions

Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves on a post, divide by your followers, then multiply by 100. For example, 480 likes, 36 comments, 20 shares and 45 saves on an account with 12,500 followers is 581 divided by 12,500, which is 4.6%.
